Elite Custom Race Plus bottle cage review

VERDICT: An entry-level bottle cage with premium performance

RATING:

HIGHS: Excellent grip, Practical design, Value for money

LOWS: Heavier than premium products, Slightly fiddly installation

PRICE: £14

The Elite Custom Race Plus bottle cage is an evolution of the former Custom Race cage from the Italian brand, and it sits among a large range of products.

Elite Custom Race Plus bottle cage design

The Custom Race Plus features an enhanced front rubber insert, which Elite claims allows the cage to self-adjust to its contents as well as adding extra security.

The new rubber insert is bigger and has been repositioned, which the brand says helps to prevent bottles drifting up the cage as you ride.
The cage is designed to perform best with 74mm diameter water bottles, though the elasticity of the rubber insert allows for slight variation. Elite says the cage can be front or side-loaded.
The Custom Race Plus cage is made from fibreglass reinforced polymer, and is available in a variety of colours, notably a new range of iridescent finishes.
The cage has neatly printed decals and well-smoothed edges. The spine and arms are sufficiently stiff, whilst the insert allows good movement for bottle access.
The high front barrier makes top bolt installation slightly time-consuming without a long Allen key, though it’s not a major issue. The mount eyelets are elongated which allows a fair degree of height adjustability on the frame.

On the bike, the rubber insert lived up to Elite’s claims, with easy bottle retrieval and replacement across a variety of different bottles. The arms are slightly tapered outwards at the top, helping to guide the bottle into the cage, and the spine curves inwards at the top, hugging the bottle.
The Stealth colour – as shown here – is matt black and the matt finish, combined with the insert, provides additional bottle grip, not solely relying on cage tension. The smooth finish also aids bottle protection and the cage seems unlikely to cause scratches or marks.
The Custom Race Plus weighed in at 40g, matching the manufacturer’s stated weight, and is comparable to similar cages on the market.
At £14, this cage from Elite is on par for a polymer-based product.
The Elite Custom Race Plus performs well beyond its price bracket and, despite being heavier than premium alternatives, would be at home on race bikes and commuting steeds alike.
